Renting a car traditionally, i.e. through established companies such as Hertz, Sixt or Avis, may seem more secure than renting a privately owned car. However, the services we have today that distribute this type of car rental include insurance, roadside assistance, and more. They also collect information of the two parties–the person who rents the car and the car owner–and provides them with information of each other, serving as another security measure.
Gomore includes an insurance through Protector, which covers both the person renting the car and the car owner. Thus, whenever you rent a car through Gomore you are automatically protected in the unfortunate case of an accident. And as owner of the car, your regular insurance is not affected if anything were to happen when the car is rented out. There are however some terms which have to be fulfilled in order for the insurance to apply. For instance, the car can not be more than 15 years old, have travelled more than 250.000 km or have a trading value of more than 500.000 SEK. It also has to be privately owned and registered in Sweden. For the person renting the vehicle, they have to be at least 23 years old, have had their driver’s license for a minimum of three years, and the car may only be driven by the person who rents it.
If you decide to go through SnappCar to rent a car, an insurance is of course included here as well in case of theft or damage. SnappCar requires you to be at least 21 years old, and that you have had your driver’s license for a minimum of one year. The insurance, which comes from If, have further terms in order for it to apply. For instance, if you are the owner, you have to have a regular insurance, and the car must be privately owned. If you are the person renting the car, it can only be driven by you unless the contract says otherwise.
Both of the aforementioned services also include roadside assistance, as well as support in case anything goes wrong with the car during the rent. When you rent your vehicle through SnappCar, you simply call their customer support in case of engine failure or other technical issues. These will localize the vehicle and arrange for it to be towed to the nearest repair shop unless the problem can be mended on site. In case of engine failure or similar that are an effect of the vehicle’s condition, the person renting the car will of course not be held responsible. Gomore include roadside assistance as well, and follow a similar procedure. If the car has suffered technical issues and is now standing on the side of the road, you simply call Falck (roadside assistance) and inform them that you are renting the car through Gomore. As above, it will be towed to the nearest repair shop unless the problem can be fixed on site. If the problem can not be fixed by the nearest shop, the insurance covers transport of the vehicle back to the owner.
Reviews and safety
Other security measures, taken by both SnappCar and Gomore, exist in order for safe usage, for both car owner and people looking to rent. For instance, SnappCar verifies your driver’s license, address, personal information and identity, and check that the details from your facebook account match with the ones you have submitted. Gomore makes sure to verify all drivers’ licenses manually, and they underline that a valid driver’s license shall be presented when the keys to a car are handed over. Both services also work with ratings and reviews. Upon finding a car you are interested of, you can check reviews from previous people who have rented the same car, see how many times it has been rented in the past, and how long it has taken the owner to answer requests in previous cases.
As the car owner, it is entirely up to you who you wish to rent your car to or not. Another measure which Gomore points out is that none of your personal details or the car’s exact location is shared before the booking has been confirmed.
